May 20, 2016 - A large part of the population could prevent cancer if lifestyle changes are made as smoking cessation, reducing alcohol consumption and a healthy weight, to look for a new trial.
The US study in JAMA Oncology also found that getting enough exercise is important, cancer and early death from disease factor to prevent.
Four healthy lifestyle factors "
The study examined data from 135,910 white men and women in the United States and relates to two groups. The first group of "low risk" had a healthy lifestyle, defined as:
- Non smoking or former smokers Be Light
- Do not drink alcohol or have no more than 1 drink per day for women and two or fewer drinks per day for men
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 18.5 but less than 27,5
- in 150 minutes of aerobic exercise of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise per week to participate.
All persons who do not meet these criteria were 4 in the "high risk" category.
Cancer deaths
The authors estimate that nearly 25% of cancers in women and 33% of cases could be prevented in men when people adopt a healthier lifestyle.
They also say that 48% of women in the cancer deaths and 44% of deaths could be prevented by following a healthy diet in men.
Individual cancers preventable varied rate of about 80% for lung cancer and 4% for breast cancer.
Although the study included only white people, the authors say there is no reason to believe that the results to other races, are not applicable.
The authors conclude: "These findings reinforce the prevailing importance of lifestyle factors in determining cancer risk Therefore, primary prevention should remain a priority for the fight against cancer.".
4 of 10 cancer cases "avoidable"
Thea Cunningham, Information Officer of Health at Cancer Research UK, said in a statement: "This study of strong evidence adds that our lifestyle can have a major impact on cancer risk Our research shows adds that could prevent more than 4 out of 10 cases of cancer in the UK. largely by changes healthy lifestyle.
"There is no guarantee against the development of cancer, but not smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, get physical activity and enjoy the sun in security, you can stack the odds in your favor. "
