For the Research Society for Women's Health

It includes our mental health and social and emotional well-being psychological effects we think, how we feel and how we act. Influenced how we handle stress, relate to others and to make decisions. The concept of "mental health" is certainly not new, but has to deal with only just begun. Unfortunately, this is not the case in minority communities - where mental health problems, especially frequent, rarely discussed.

According to the Ministry of Health and Human Services Minority Health (OMH) to have in the United States, African Americans are a whopping 20 percent more non-Hispanic whites [1] "serious psychological distress".

But it is certainly affect not African American population: the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI) cites the American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN), that the population of the problems most prevalent mental health, with 28, 3 percent adult / AI inform an area with a mental health condition. [2] non-Hispanic white adults have a prevalence of 19.3 percent; African-American adults, 18.6 percent; Hispanic, 16.3 percent; and Asian adults have a prevalence of 13.9 percent. [2] As of NAMI, the mental health affects everyone, regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

OMH reported that the extent of poverty has an impact on mental health. African-Americans live below the poverty line, against more than twice the poverty level are three times more likely to have psychological problems. [1] poverty may prevent people from accessing the care they need. NAMI compiled as obstacles to the quality of mental health care in the minority [2] the following populations:
• Less access to treatment
• Less likely to receive treatment
• Poorer quality of care
• Greater Stigma
• culturally insensitive Health System
• racism, prejudice, homophobia and discrimination in the areas of treatment
• language barriers
• The lowest health insurance rates

In addition, people with a chronic disease - diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and arthritis, many of which are in minority communities often - are more psychological problems such as depression experience. [3]

It is also important to note that women already have higher rates of mental health problems than men - two-thirds of people with depression are women and eating disorders, panic disorders, phobias and disorders or borderline personality mainly disproportionately affected women. [4]

The Society for Research on Women's Health is the pioneer in the promotion of research on the biological differences in the disease and is dedicated to the transformation of women and minority health through science, promotion and education.
