My mother grew up in a generation that thought everything was thin; You were either thin or trying to get through it. When I was a child, I saw her nourish one by one and fight norms that, like Latina, were completely unreal. Seeing my mother struggle with her weight confused me: I looked at her and thought she was beautiful, she was my mother. And this woman, whom I admired every day, could not see her own beauty? I watched both obsessed and pursued by a certain jeans size, thin and not too many curves, which was always thin, hoping to get this dress, hoping to be happy.
And that's what caught my eye: I did not want to wait.
Only when I started to take theater lessons and through the art that I really found and my voice, the voice that tells me that if you can dream it, you can be there. I studied theater, dance and singing, and these skills and talents made me happy and sparked a fire in me. Finally, at the age of 18, I followed that voice to California to become an actress.
In Hollywood, I realized that you're not a fast acting actress. Several casting agents and directors have repeatedly told me, "Oh, if they had lost only 10 to 15 pounds, they would be perfect for that part." Too high, too low, too convoluted, too shameless. If he had tried to adapt to his shells, we would all wait. I simply could not believe that my abilities, my brain, and my tenacity were ignored because of my size.
But I'm not one of those who allow someone else to change me. Hollywood should wait while I have something else in mind. As a creative heart, my next path was make-up and beauty, and here I was discovered as a model. One day a photographer asked me if I had previously modeled and if she could take my pictures. I thought, " This woman is crazy." I could not see him. I kept thinking, " I'm too short, I'm too curvilinear, " but I accepted the project, and the rest is history. All I needed was a voice, a woman, to change my path. And the more I shine, the more I can help others to shine too.
We need to keep talking and encourage women to think that they can be themselves inside and out.
Now I am a mother myself. Nowhere did I feel such a responsibility as teaching my daughter that there is no wrong way to be herself: to be a young woman no matter how tall she is. I know how early these ideas are taught in each new generation, and it is my job to be that voice; Tell her that she is beautiful and that she can realize what she is up to.
It took a long time until my mother finally kissed her beautiful body. Although I really think about my career and have played my part in it, I am even happier to believe that this change has come about because people from all over the world are finally talking about the positivity of the body. It helped. Help all women. And we need to keep talking and encourage women to feel themselves, internally and externally.
