Thursday, 17 March 2016 (HealthDay News) - In the 1980s, used to women have more years to live freely on United States of disability than men, but a new study shows that the model appears to be changing.
For older people, the news is very positive, the researchers report: They are not only living longer, but with less disability.
For women, the situation is different: There has been little progress that men, and in some ways, they took a step back.
Older women in particular in the United States were more likely to live with a moderate disability in 2011 than in 2004 - an investment observed in improving since 1982nd
The study defined moderate disabilities to manage as problems with daily activities such as shopping, cleaning or money. Among men, the prevalence of this expenditure has decreased 1982-2004 and has remained virtually unchanged.
Older women, prevalence of disability seen against it by nearly 13 percent in 1982 to about 10 percent in 2004. But in 2011, moderate disability was found increased to 14 percent, researchers this number.
The reasons for this are not clear, said author Vicki Freedman study, researchers at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research in Ann Arbor.
On average, he said, women are economically disadvantaged compared to men, and that could be a factor. "The next step, in order to better understand is why this is happening," Freedman said.
Another expert had a different theory.
Rate of obesity of women could be higher also play a role in the last few decades, said Barbara Resnick, President of Gerontology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. She is also a past president of the American Geriatrics Society.
American men are heavier than in the past, be. However, Resnick, who also have more muscle mass and strength than women, tend to, they may be able to get more of its physical function, she said age.
The results are based on information from national surveys of the health of Americans older, conducted 65 years in 1982, 2004 and 2011th
