CHICAGO (AP) - During their working years, women tend to earn less than men, and when they retire, they are more likely to live in poverty.

There are women, children and care for sick relatives and the elderly, who often take the savings and income they have, and increase spending on things outside their own retirement security.

The National Pension Security Institute, a nonprofit research reported that women are 80 percent more likely than men aged 65 to impoverish. Older women 75-79 are three times more likely.

While experts cite a wage gap as the main cause of insecurity retirement, other factors play a role, single parents and divorce the fact that women live longer than men, as a rule.

By Marsha Hall, 60, of the process of retirement to try to save is almost impossible.

"I've had jobs that include a 401 (k), and I am able to lay aside some money each month," he said. "But then I'd lose the job and have the 401 (k) collect money to live."

Born and raised in Detroit Hall is divorced and has no children. She works part-time as a file clerk. She and her brothers open to take care of his mother 75 years. Hall said he tried not to think about what will be your situation like at this age.

"My accounts are current, have food," he said, "but I'm still alive paycheck if a portion were 8 (housing benefit), do not know where I would live on me."

Joan Entmacher, vice president for the economic security of the family in the center for women's national law says that "retirement crisis solution (Financing) begins with the gains and wage differentials."

This difference decreased between 1970 and 1990, but the reduction was in 2001, women earn about 76 cents to 79 cents, compared to men arrested.

Women are more likely to say that social security, the largest source of income - 50 percent to 38 percent for men, according to a recent Associated Press poll of-NORC Center for the matters of public research. Women are 14 percentage points less likely to say that they receive a pension.

Entmacher said women to take more care on responsibility to increase the likelihood that they are part-time jobs at the end, often for lower wages and without benefits such as pensions, health and health care of them.

"Most housewives are not these high-income, well-educated women that you read about," she said.

During a 40-year career, the pay gap between men and women on an average $ 430,480, the accordion, the Census Bureau says. For minorities and women of color, the number is much higher.

"When we talk of a black woman of 65, born before separation," said Karen Lincoln, a professor at the University of Southern California and director of social assistance in geriatrics.

"This has a big impact on things like the quality of the education they receive them employment opportunities available, and their ability to accumulate wealth," Lincoln said.

Lincoln points to additional census data shows African-American women, 64 percent of white men are paid, compared to 54 percent of Hispanic and Latina women. Besides the fact that fewer women are much more likely to be single parents, with the additional economic burden on them. In 2013 were almost 83 percent of the custodial parent mothers, according to the census.

The "war on poverty" administrative Johnson in 1964 and the establishment of social protection programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the poverty rate among men and women have been declining steadily. In 1966, the proportion of women was over 65 below the official poverty line 32 percent, compared to 12.1 percent in 2014. For men over 65 years, the figures are 23 percent and 5 percent 7.4.

However, some analysts say that the poverty rate Aging is a poor indicator for evaluating the quality of life of older people.

"The poverty rate is a misleading figure that does not reflect the money (men and women) are actually" Jennifer Brown, director of research said at the National Institute for retirement security.

Brown said that the increase in life expectancy means that a woman who now 5 years more to live in the United States than the average man, and about four years older than her grandmother.

"This increases the longevity with a huge increase in the cost of medical care," Brown said. "Especially if you take things as long-term care or treatment of mental disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease."

Medicare does not cover long-term care. To obtain subsidized coverage, should seniors take assets to remove for Medicaid or have to qualify for long-term care insurance.

In 2016, the census is poverty line for a single person $ 11.880. According to the index of people over UCLA, a measure of the cost of accommodation, meals, transportation and health care, for a tenant of 65, to pay the cost basis for these needs, it is $ 24,024 and more.
